There were the inevitable rain delays, but our mural marking Babur’s 30th anniversary is now finished.
So many of you have stopped to talk with Matthew McGuinness and his team as they were painting the mural and that really encouraged them on in their formidable task. Thank you.
Matthew’s ideas have evolved since he first asked us about painting a food-related mural two years ago. After much research, discussion and sketches, he decided to tell a story of how spices inspired exploration and brought all of us a little closer together.
More about the artist
Living just a few blocks from the restaurant, Matthew was especially determined that his work should enhance the neighbourhood. To that end, he chose a palate of colours drawn from the bricks and mortar that make up the buildings surrounding us.
The piece is very rhythmic, making it a pleasure to look at while walking past, maybe stopping to read the writing on the wall, or to take in one of the visual puns, like the side-by-side comparison of the shape of Manhattan Island and a nutmeg grater.
It was equally important for us to mark 30 years on Brockley Rise by way of a visual thank you to our friends and neighbours.
